Walter C Davis1

M, #2213, b. 1868
Last Edited26 Oct 2008
Walter C Davis was born in 1868 at Virginia.1 He was the son of (Male) Davis and Mary L (?).2

Walter C Davis appeared in the 1880 census as a step son of Frank T Jones at Darvilles, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on 17 June 1880. He was listed as Walter Davis, age 11, born in Virginia, at home.3

Walter C Davis married Etta L (?) in 1889. based on being married 11 years in the 1900 census.4,5 Anna B Bolling, Walter C Davis and Frank T Jones was mentioned in a letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling on 28 January 1897 at Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.6 The letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling that mentioned him read as follows:
Wilson, N.C.
January 28th, 1897

My dear sister,

I wrote to you not long since. You have not answered that letter; but I write again. I study greatly about you both by day and by night and pray to God to open your eyes and enable you to see that you are doing more than he or your relatives know you ought to do. If there was any chance of your reforming Anna by your remaining with her it would be different, but you must see that there is none. Consequently for you to spend the short remainder of your days in working and _____ with suffering on Anna’s account as you are now doing and have been doing for several years, God is too just a god to require it of you. You are just suffering for naught. Suffering a lingering and miserable death. If you remain where you are I shall not be surprised at any time to hear of your death.

Sister, leave Brunswick and go to Dinwiddie. I fully believe Sister Lou would gladly receive you and take good care of you, and I also believe both Frank Jones and Walter Davis would help you and make the rest of your life as pleasant as possible. Sister, listen to your old brother who loves you and often grieves that he cannot influence you in what he fully believes is required. If you can not do any other way, leave everything you have behind and go. Let Lou and brother Frank advise you.

I expect to go to Virginia in the Spring or Summer and would be so delighted to find you in Dinwiddie, but if you remain where you are, you have nothing to give me to eat and no where for me to sleep. And besides, I never want to lay my eyes on Anna again. She has forfeited both my love and respect.

Sister, write to me and write me that you will take my advise.

I would be so rejoiced to meet you, but I cannot do so unless you leave Brunswick and go to Dinwiddie.

Sister write.
               Your old brother
               T.B. Gilliam

Dear Charlie,

Nearly three long years have passed by since I last saw you and yes I am at leisure this evening. I will attempt to _____ an _____ ______ with you although I must confess in the ______ ____ ____ of my letter that I feel inadequate to the task. I remained in Brunswick until the 16th of last November where one kind hearted good nephew Walter Davis received me under his hospitable roof and I am still residing with this kind family. I am satisfied and contented in my home, but the sad and distressing death of my poor unfortunate child Anna has so thoroughly depressed me. I am almost frantic with grief. The news papers are giving sad accounts of her cruel death; killed and her body burned. Have you ever found of who committed the awful deed? My suffering both in mind and body are so great they are almost beyond forbearance and endurance. The hand of affliction is also heavily laid upon me. I am now partially paralyzed; scarcely able to walk; racked with pain day and night. I have but few intervals of ease. I am also in both destitute and dependent circumstances and if I live a short time longer I expect to die in the poorhouse. I only wish I could visit you and your dear family and have a long talk with you. I know you would comfort and console me. I have been told that Anna was insane before her death. Is it so, and if it’s the truth, what caused her insanity? I heard from ____ _____ _____ that _____ bones were put in a box and buried in your graveyard. It must have been an awful sight. Did she ever speak of me and also did she wish to see me? She led an awful life and died an awful death. Sister Leslie Jones has received your letter in regard to Anna’s death. The family are all well and doing well; indeed they are ______ Brother Tom Gilliam is now ____ and gravely ill, his death is hourly expected. He is 83 years old. He says he is ready and willing to go at any moment his maker calls him.

Charlie, please be kind enough to reply to my letter soon and write me full particulars of Anna’s death. Have you found out who committed the awful deed; and if so please be kind enough to inform me. _______ me if she was satisfied in your house, and also did she go in society. What has become of her ______; ____ ____ she ____ it.

Give my ____ _____ and kindest regards to each and every member of your dear family, particularly your good mother.

Reply to my letter soon. I will thank you kindly to do so.

      Very affectionately,
               Ann E. Bolling
