Edmund Stewart left a will 1839 at Sussex County, Virginia, in 1839. Mentioned in the county documents was Edmund Stewart. Mentioned in the county documents were John Stewart, Eliza A. E. Stewart, Richard Y Bland Jr, Richard E Stewart, John E. Stewart and Richard B Grigg. He was the guardian of the orphaned, under-aged children of Edmund Stewart.1 The probate document read as follows:

To the worshipful County Court of Sussex in Chancery Now Sitting

Humbly complaining shew unto your Worship your Complainant Richard Y Bland Jr & Eliza A. E. his wife formerly Stewart, that Edmund Stewart the father of one of your complainants died Intestate leaving considerable Estate both Real and Personal, that, as of the time of his death, he left four children, to wit: Rich(ar)d E, John E, Eliza A. E. and Martha B Stewart his Heirs at law, that one of said children has since departed this life, and your compl(aina)nt Eliza A. E. Bland and her Brothers Richard E & John E. Stewart are her Heirs, so that there are but three of the children of the said Edmund Stewart Decd. Who are entitled to distribution of said Estate. You complainants beg leave farther to represent that John Stewart and much of one of your compl(ainan)ts, departed this life some time since but before he died duly made and published his last will & testament, by which he devised a considerable Estate to the Orphans of his Brother Edmund Stewart, thus decd., that the same parties interested in the Distribution of Edmund Stewart’s Est(ate) are entitle to the said Legacy by their uncle so made, that a certain Richard B Grigg having duly qualified at their Guardian took possession of & has regularly managed the said Estates in that capacity, that your Complainant Bland has intermarried with Eliza A. E. Stewart one of the said Orphans & that they wish (page 2 begins) their portion of said Estates allotted to heirs. The Prayer of your complainants therefore is that this count would deem a Division of the said Property by Commissioners duly appointed for that purpose, & that the Said Grigg as Guardian of the said Eliza A. E. Bland, formerly Stewart, be required to settle his transactions before a Commsr. of this Court & that they may have such other and general relief as they are entitled to in Equity. They further pray that the said Grigg Guardian as aforesaid, & Richard E & John E Stewart may be made Debts hereto & called upon to answer the facts set forth in the above Bill fully & unconsciously & as in duty bound they will ever pray & etc. Butts for the Complts.

The joint and several answers of Richard B Grigg, Richard E & John E Stewart, the two last Infants by their Guardian ad litum R. B. Grigg specially appointed by the court for the purpose of defending this suit.

These Respondents saving – reserving &c all benefits &c for answer to so much of s(ai)d Bill as they are advised it is necessary for them to answer, say that they belive the facts set forth in the above Bill are true so far as they know or believe & that they have no objection that this court should made a Decree for a division of said Estates, in (page 3 begins) order to set apart the proportion of said Bland & wife & the said deft. Rich(ar)d B. Grigg farther says, that he is not only willing that the said Bland & wife should have their shar allotted them, but moreover prays the court that there may be a complete division of said Estates amongst the three children, that he has no objections, to the Decree for an account of his transactions as Guardian of said Eliza A. E. & wishes the order extended so as to comprise the three & having thus fully answered they pray to be dismissed hence to that theirs for other costs &c. Butts for Defts.

This day this cause was docreated (?) by consent of parties and come on to be heard on the Bill & Answers & was argued by counsel, upon consideration whereof the court doth adjudge, order & decree that John Lassott, Jessee Whitehorn, Johann Cain, Seymour Northerop, & Edmund Bailey be commrs. (commissioners) and they are duly appointed any three of those may act, accompanied by a competent surveyor, do value and divide the Lands belonging to the Orphans of Edmund Stewart Decd. In to three Equal parts having respect to quantity as well as quality & allot one to Richard Y Bland & Eliza A. E, his wife formerly Stewart, an other to Richard E. Stewart, & the other third to John E. Stewart, & that the said commrs. (commissioners) on some convenint day to be designated by (page 4 begins) the Parties, to meet and & divide the slaves belonging to said orphans, in to three equal parts, having regard to quantity as well as quality and allot, one equal third part to Rich(ar)d Y Bland Jr & Eliza A. E, his wife formerly Stewart, another to Richard E. Stewart & the other to John E Stewart, & that the said Commrs. Make report &c.

And the court further orders that Richard B. Grigg Guardian of Eliza A. E. Bland late Stewart & of Rich(ar)d E. & John E. Stewart do rinder an account of his transactions as such before Master Commr. Prince who is hereby directed to audit, state & settle the same & make report & that the said Bland & wife are not to have the benefit of this decree until they enter in to a Refunding Bond as a reasonable (unreadable …) to refund due proportions of Debts &c.

Wlliam F Gunn was born in 1830.

Wlliam F Gunn married Jane E Eppes, daughter of John C. Eppes and Ann Carter, between 1851 and 1860. I assume she married after 1850 and before 1860 because Jane E. Eppes is listed with her family in 1850 and not in 1860.

Wlliam F Gunn appeared in the 1860 census as the head of household, free population schedule on 23 June 1860. Also living in the house was Jane E Eppes and William Junius Gunn. He was listed as Wm. F. Gunn, age 30, born in Virginia, farmer. He had real estate valued at $3,000, and personal property , at $5,550.1

Wlliam F Gunn died before 11 December 1873.

Brand Hardenbergh was born in 1928 at Virginia.1 He was the son of Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr and Marion Charlton Brand.

Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr and Brand Hardenbergh appeared in the 1930 census as a son of Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr in Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia, on 22 April 1930. He was listed as Brand Hardenburg, age 2, born in Virginia.1

Brand Hardenbergh married Lafayette Amos in 1956.2

In 2008,Brand Hardenbergh lived at Po Box 438, Colonial Beach, Westmoreland County, Virginia, 22443.

Brand Hardenbergh died on 26 February 2012 at Virginia. Brand was survived by his wife, Lafayette Amos Hardenbergh.2

On 29 February 2012, Brand's obituary appeared in the newspaper in Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia. The obituary listed Maxine Atmore Hardenbergh, Henry Hall Hardenbergh III and Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr as preceding him in death. It listed Lafayette Amos Hardenbergh, Carter L Hardenbergh, Melissa Hardenbergh, Frances Batte Hardenbergh and Charles VanEvera Hardenbergh as surviving him.2

Brand's obituary read:
BRAND HARDENBERGH

HARDENBERGH, Brand, of Tappahannock, Va., was found deceased of natural causes on Wednesday, February 26, 2012. He was born on April 15, 1928 in Richmond, Va., son of the late Henry Hall Hardenbergh and Marian Charlton Brand Hardenbergh.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17, serving during the last days of World War II. He was called back to service during the Korean War, serving a total of six years as an electrician, including service aboard the U.S.S. Witek and the U.S.S. Tawakoni.

He was honorably discharged in 1951, and his decorations included The Good Conduct Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, W.W.II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Brand graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he completed his studies in December 1957.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lafayette Amos Hardenbergh; his stepson, Clyde Y. Cridlin and wife, Linda; his nephew, Carter L. Hardenbergh; and wife, Melissa and family; his niece, Frances Batte Hardenbergh; and his great-nephew, Charles VanEvera Hardenbergh and wife, Mari. He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr; his sister, Maxine Atmore Hardenbergh; and his nephew, Henry Hall Hardenbergh III.

Brand grew up at Frederick's Hall in Louisa County, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was blessed with a quick wit, a unique sense of humor, and always had a sparkle in his eye. He was a skilled mechanic, and he was fond of working on his cars and boats as he was of driving and spending time at sea. He was a devoted Christian who loved and served the Lord and his fellow man.

Services will be held at the Rappahannock Christian Church in Dunnsville on Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m.

John V Hardenbergh Jr, Charles DePew Hardenbergh and Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr appeared in the 1900 census as a son of John V. Hardenbergh in Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia, on 5 June 1900. He was listed as Chas. Hardenberg, age 16, born Mar 1884 in Virginia, attending school.4

Charles DePew Hardenbergh married Blanche H. (?) in 1907.1,2
     Charles DePew Hardenbergh and Blanche H. Hardenbergh was listed as a lodger of Eva M. Thomas on the 1910 Census 424 North 10th Street, Richmond, Virginia, on 20 April 1910. Charles Hardenburgh, age 27, married once. He had been married 3 years. His occupation was bookkeeper for a grains house.1

Charles DePew Hardenbergh registered for the World War 1 Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at 2234 W. Grace Street, Richmond, Virginia. His nearest relative was his wife, Blanche H. (?). John V Hardenbergh Jr, Charles DePew Hardenbergh and Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr appeared in the 1900 census as a son of John V. Hardenbergh in Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia, on 5 June 1900. He was listed as Henry H. Hardenberg, age 14, born Apr 1886 in Virginia, attending school.3

Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr married Marion Charlton Brand, daughter of Charles A Brand and Mildred Early Murray, before 1917.2

Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr appeared in the 1920 census as the head of household on 15 January 1920 at Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia. Also living in the house was his wife, Marion Charlton Brand, his son, Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr, his daughter, Mildred A Hardenbergh, his father, John V. (?), his daughter, Elizabeth C Hardenbergh and Sarah A. Hardenbergh. He was listed as J. V. Hardenburg, age 38, married, born in Philadelphia. His occupation is farmer.1

John V. Hardenbergh appeared in the 1900 census as the head of household on 5 June 1900 at Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia. Also living in the house was his wife, Mary A. (?), his son, John V Hardenbergh Jr, Charles DePew Hardenbergh and Henry Hall Hardenbergh Sr, his daughter, Elizabeth C Hardenbergh and Sarah A. Hardenbergh. Sarah A. Hardenbergh was born in September 1879 at Virginia. She was the daughter of John V. Hardenbergh and Mary A. (?).

Elizabeth C Hardenbergh and Sarah A. Hardenbergh appeared in the 1880 census as a daughter of John V. Hardenbergh on 15 June 1880 at Orange County, Virginia. She was listed as Sarah A. Hardenburg, age nine months, born in Virginia.1

Elizabeth C Hardenbergh and Sarah A. Hardenbergh appeared in the 1900 census as a daughter of John V. Hardenbergh in Cuckoo, Louisa County, Virginia, on 5 June 1900. She was listed as Sadie J. Hardenberg, age 19, single, born Aug 1880 in Virginia. Her occupation was teacher. She had had no employment for 4 months that year.2

Sarah A. Hardenbergh died.
