Frank T Jones1

Frank T Jones was born in 1837 at Virginia.1

Frank T Jones married Frances (?) before 1870.2

Frank T Jones was listed as the head of household on the 1870 census on 12 August 1870 at Darvilles, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Also living in the house was his wife, Frances (?).2

Frank T Jones married Mary L (?) before 1875. This is a guess only. Some of the young children in the household in 1880 could have been from the first wife.1

Frank T Jones appeared in the 1880 census as the head of household on 17 June 1880 at Darvilles, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Also living in the house was his wife, Mary L (?), his son, Wilber Jones, Everett Jones and John Jones, his step son, Walter C Davis. He was listed as Frank Jones, age 43, married, born in Virginia. His occupation was farmer.3 Anna B Bolling, Charles Randolph Stewart and Frank T Jones was mentioned in a letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling on 21 December 1894 at Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.4 The letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling that mentioned him read as follows:
Wilson, N.C.
Dec. 21st, 1894

My dearest Sister,

Yours arrived this morning. How shocked, how sorrow stricken I was to read your letter. Surely you do not think of self destruction. Surely you have forgotten that there is a wise and just God who governs and controls all things. I have written to Charles Stewart to go up after Anna, and I hope you will do all in your power to get Anna to go with him. You will know by sad experience that you can not control her. If she remains there she is a doomed woman. If she will go with Cousin Charles, he his wife and cousin Sue may control and reform her. Now my dear Sister, listen to me. Consent for Anna to go and advise and persuade her to go. I know she is all you have. She is a source of trouble and grief to you and rejects all advice and counsel you give her. They may reform her, you cannot.

I was truly rejoiced to hear Lou and Bro. Frank had been to see you and offered to take you down near them.

Now my dear Sister hear me. You cannot control Anna. Stewart and his wife and mother may, and I believe will be able to do so. Give her up into their hands and the hands of the Lord. Pray for her constantly, and I will do the same. Go down near Lou and I am fully persuaded she will do a good part by you. Get brother Frank to advise and help you to manage your affairs. I feel fully assured he will manage them wisely and honestly. You know he is a successful man.

Now my sister, do as I have advised you. Do as Bro. Frank advises you and you may yet have a _____ life.

Put your unbounded trust in God. Pray much and often. ____ and _____ with God. He will always guide and protect you.

Sister, I am your only brother, who has shed many tears over you, prayed many prayers for you and ____, and now do what I have advised you to do.

Hear me Sister, hear me.

God be with you.
4 Charles Randolph Stewart, Anna B Bolling and Frank T Jones was mentioned in a letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling on 15 January 1895 at Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.4 The letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling that mentioned him read as follows:
Wilson, N.C.
January 15th, 1895

My dear sister,

I write to you again though you have not answered my last letter. I have quite recently heard some sad, shocking news about Anna, which I still hope is untrue. God grant it may be ___. I feel sure it will be so, if you and Anna remain where you are; and if she continues to move over ___ ____ ____ by herself as you informed me she was doing.

Now sister, I want you to ____ _____ so now ____ I am going to say. Do not stay where you are. Sell what you have and put yourself and what you have in Frank Jones hands, and let him manage you and all your affairs for I feel well assured he would manage both you and them ______. If I did not fully believe it, I would not advise you to such a course.

Sister, you ought to know you can not manage an estate. I fear, if you undertook to do so you will soon be penniless, and as for Anna , of course she will soon spend what she has, and I greatly fear spend a life of shame and disgrace.

Sister, listen to your only, old brother, who feels a deep and abiding interest in you. You know so little of business and that wicked and dishonest ____, who professes to be your best friend will cheat and defraud you out of all your property and then mock and laugh at you.

I believe Frank Jones will do fairly and honestly with you and your property. He is a businessman and knows how both to save and how to make money. And I believe if you were near Lou she would see that you were well treated and would take good care of you.

You see that you cannot control Anna, but that she is a source of trouble and worry to you. I do not believe you will ever be able to control her, ‘til God has changed her heart and her life.

Sister, consult with Frank Jones, Lou and Charles Stewart, and do as they advise. Let Charles Stewart take Anna and try to control and reform her. You have tried long enough to see and know she will not be controllable by you. I do hope you will listen to your old gray headed brother, who _____ and sighs and weeps over your situation. If you and Anna are afraid to trust Anna’s property to Charles, let Jones manage that as well as your own.

I have written to bro. Frank and Lou and Charles Stewart to go to see you and try to persuade you to dome course that will be better both for you and Anna.

I shall continue to pray for you and Anna and hope the good Lord will direct you in all things.

Sister, do not think of remaining where you are and Anna ____ ____ over the neighborhood. You write that you feared the neighbors would drive you away on account of Anna’s conduct. Do ____ ____ ____ but go of your own free will and ____ ____ while you can. Sister, listen to me, and I feel ___ ___ never regret it.

Your ____
T.B. Gilliam

PS If you knew the tears I have shed and the trouble I have seen ____ ____, you would listen to me.
4 Anna B Bolling, Charles Randolph Stewart and Frank T Jones was mentioned in a letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam on 19 September 1896.4 The letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam that mentioned him read as follows:
Wilson, N.C.
Sept. 19th, 1896

Dear Sister,

You last received. I was sorry, truly sorry that I could not send you more money than I did. I received a letter from Lou yesterday saying you had sent for Bro. Frank to go to see you next Tuesday. I hope he will go and that you and he will discuss and agree on some plan by which you can leave that old den in Brunswick in which you have been living a dying death for twenty years.

When I recall the letters you have written me in that time and recall the pictures you have drawn of the life you were living and the privations you were suffering, how, as a brother , could I do otherwise than weep and mourn over your situation? If I loved you , as I do, how could I help weeping and suffering over your situation?

Now sister, you see and feel that you can not live on in the future as you have done in the past, I hope you will act ____ and prudently and listen to Frank Jones and I say to you . If cousin Henry did request you to remain where you are and cultivate the farm, you have tried that and now as a result you are nearly on starvation. Besides I reckon he thought Anna would be a help and comfort to you, but instead of that she has been a curse to you, and will continue to be one and more so. I understand she is acting as badly as ever, even more. And how Dr. Jones can persuade you to continue living there in hope of reforming Anna I can not see. You ought to be able to see the utter folly of continuing to live the life you are living. You wrote me that Anna was unkind to you and had beaten you. How can you stand such treatment from a child who has been so much indulged and _____ as she has been. I suppose even now you are feeding and cooking and washing for her, and she traipses around looking for men. Sister, if your old mother could know the life you have led for the last few years she would be shocked. I do not mean that you have done anything mean, but then you are living with Anna and she a common prostitute. I recollected you mention that you did not know whether Anna’s child would be white or black.

Now sister, I hope as you have sent for Frank Jones, you will talk to him freely and listen to the advise he may give you. I think he will offer you a home with Lou and will try to manage your affairs wisely and if he does, I entreat you my sister to accept his offer.

You little know how much pleasure and joy it would gain me to know you had left Anna forever. She is old enough to take care of herself and if she does not know she is not too old to learn.

Sister, listen to us: act wisely and you will ever rejoice that you have done so.

Your brother,
T.B. Gilliam
4 Anna B Bolling, Walter C Davis and Frank T Jones was mentioned in a letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling on 28 January 1897 at Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.4 The letter from Thomas Booth Gilliam to Ann E Gilliam Bolling that mentioned him read as follows:
Wilson, N.C.
January 28th, 1897

My dear sister,

I wrote to you not long since. You have not answered that letter; but I write again. I study greatly about you both by day and by night and pray to God to open your eyes and enable you to see that you are doing more than he or your relatives know you ought to do. If there was any chance of your reforming Anna by your remaining with her it would be different, but you must see that there is none. Consequently for you to spend the short remainder of your days in working and _____ with suffering on Anna’s account as you are now doing and have been doing for several years, God is too just a god to require it of you. You are just suffering for naught. Suffering a lingering and miserable death. If you remain where you are I shall not be surprised at any time to hear of your death.

Sister, leave Brunswick and go to Dinwiddie. I fully believe Sister Lou would gladly receive you and take good care of you, and I also believe both Frank Jones and Walter Davis would help you and make the rest of your life as pleasant as possible. Sister, listen to your old brother who loves you and often grieves that he cannot influence you in what he fully believes is required. If you can not do any other way, leave everything you have behind and go. Let Lou and brother Frank advise you.

I expect to go to Virginia in the Spring or Summer and would be so delighted to find you in Dinwiddie, but if you remain where you are, you have nothing to give me to eat and no where for me to sleep. And besides, I never want to lay my eyes on Anna again. She has forfeited both my love and respect.

Sister, write to me and write me that you will take my advise.

I would be so rejoiced to meet you, but I cannot do so unless you leave Brunswick and go to Dinwiddie.

Sister write.
               Your old brother
               T.B. Gilliam
