Anna W Mason1

F, #669, b. October 1871
Last Edited26 Oct 2008
Annie M. Chappell is another enigma. I originally thought her name was Annie Mason, but her daughter's social security application listed her mother's name as: Annie Mason Chappell. It is also possible that Annie was married previously.
2 Anna W Mason was born in October 1871 at Virginia Birth month, year, state was listed in the 1900 US Census.3

Anna W Mason married Charles Randolph Stewart, son of John E. Stewart and Susan G.P. Bolling, in 1896. She was listed as having been married four years in the 1900 US Census.3 Her married name was Anna W Mason Stewart.4

Her son, George A Stewart, died before 15 June 1900 at Virginia.2,3

Anna W Mason appeared in the 1900 census as the wife of Charles Randolph Stewart Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, 16 June 1900. She was listed as Anna W Stewart, age 28, born Dec 1871 in Virginia. She had been married four years. She had had two children, with one still living.3

When she was 32, her son, Randolph Stewart, died in November 1903 at Virginia at age 4.2

Sota sent a letter to Anna W Mason Stewart on 22 June 1904 from Waldemar, Virginia.5 The letter from Anna W Mason Stewart to an unknown person read as follows:
Waldemar, VA
June 22nd 1904

Mrs. C.R. Stewart
Aivland PO, Sussex Co, VA

Dear Annie,

I got home all right. When I opened my satchel I found that I had lost my money $1.00 in greenbacks. Please see if you can find it. I can’t see how or where I misplaced it.

Please see if you can find it. I am and all are well. Write soon.

          Lovingly,
          Sota

5

Her husband, Charles Randolph Stewart, was buried after 17 September 1940 in Dawson Cemetery at Shallowford Road, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia.2
She was not listed with her family. Where was she? So, the 1910 Census really is him and his family! He moved away due to the murder trial of 1904.

Moving from Sussex County to Henrico County would have been quite a move. If he had sold his farm and left farming, however, Richmond was large commercial center and would have been a good move.

His years of marriage listed at 27 years would definitely be wrong.

However, one of the children could have been supplying the data and had not known.

The names and ages of the children match other than the youngest child who was not alive for the previous census.

Also his wife Anna was also not enumerated but she could have passed away.

Dennis McManamin was born in 1798 at Ireland.1

Dennis McManamin married Mary (?).

Dennis McManamin appeared in the 1880 census as the head of household on 28 June 1880 at Belfield, Greensfield County, Virginia. Also living in the house was his wife, Mary McManamin, his son, Michael McManamin, his daughter-in-law, Mary McManamin, his granddaughter, Hannah Agnes McManamin, his grandson, John McManamin, Patrick D McManamin and Anthony McManamin. He was listed as Dennis McManamin, age 82, born in Ireland. His occupation was farmer. Both of his parents were born in Ireland.1

Dennis McManamin died on 4 June 1884. Dennis was survived by his wife, Mary (?), and his son, Michael McManamin.2 Dennis McManamin was buried after 4 June 1884 in St Joseph's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia. His stone says:

Dennis McManamin
Died June 4, 1884.2

Research Notes: Dennis was married to Mary born in 1790. Michael, his son, was married to Mary, born in 1830. All of them were born in Ireland.

I found Michael and his Mary in Pennsylvania in the 1860 and 1870 census records in Pennsylvania where he was a coal miner.

I found no record of his father, Dennis, and his mother Mary, until Michael and his wife Mary and their children are found in the 1880 census residing with his father, a farmer, in Greensville County, Virginia.

Dennis was the first to die and be buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg. Next to him is a Mary who died in 1884.

We have assumed that this is Dennis' wife since she was the oldest Mary. This would have made her 94 when she died.

Next to Mary was buried the other Mary, who died in 1888. If this was Michael's wife, she would have been 58 when she died.

Next to the second Mary is buried Michael, Dennis' son

More research is needed to figure out which Mary is which.

Relationship2nd great-grandfather of James Shelton Horne
ChartsPedigree Chart - Mary Marguerite Pedneau
Michael McManamin was born in 1833 at Ireland.1 He was the son of Dennis McManamin and Mary (?).

Michael McManamin married Mary (?).

Michael McManamin appeared in the 1860 census as the head of household, free population schedule on 27 June 1860 Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Also living in the house was Mary McManamin, Hannah Agnes McManamin and Henry McManamin. He was listed as Michael McManamin, age 30, born in Ireland. His occupation was miner. His real estate was valued at $200; and his personal property, at $50.2

Michael McManamin was listed as the head of household on the 1870 census on 25 June 1870 at Hazle, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Also living in the house was his wife, Mary McManamin, his son, John McManamin and Patrick D McManamin, his daughter, Hannah Agnes McManamin. He was listed as Michael McManamin, age 40, born in Ireland, cannot read or write. His occupation was coal miner. Also in the house was James McManamin, coal miner, age 23, born in Ireland; Dennis McManamin, age 21, coal miner, born in Ireland; and John McManamin, age 21, laborer, born in Ireland; John McCelvey, age 25, laborer, born in Ireland; and James McCelvery, age 22, laborer, born in Ireland.3

Michael McManamin appeared in the 1880 census as a son of Dennis McManamin on 28 June 1880 at Belfield, Greensfield County, Virginia. He was listed as Michael McManamin, age 47, born in Ireland. His occupation was farm laborer. Both of his parents were born in Ireland.4

Died July 31, 1897.8
