Mary Belvidere Briggs, Leah Pace Briggs and Anna Atkinson Briggs appeared in the 1900 census as a daughter of Samuel Briggs in Newville, Sussex County, Virginia, on 22 June 1900. She was listed as Mary B. Briggs, age 12, born Feb 1887 in Virginia, attending school; Samuel Briggs, age 41, born Aug 1858 in Virginia. His occupation was grocery salesman.1

Mary Belvidere Briggs, Leah Pace Briggs and Anna Atkinson Briggs appeared in the 1910 census as a daughter of Samuel Briggs on 13 May 1910 in Newville, Sussex County, Virginia. She was listed as Mary B. Briggs, age 23, single, born in Virginia. Her occupation was school teacher; Samuel Briggs, age 57, married once, born in Virginia. He was 29 when he first married. His occupation was farmer.2

Mary Belvidere Briggs married Nathaniel Proctor Peebles Sr, son of Thomas N Peebles and Alice P (?), on 8 January 1913. Her married name was Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles.

Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles appeared in the 1930 census as the wife of Nathaniel Proctor Peebles Sr Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, on 20 April 1930. She was listed as Mary B. Peebles, age 43, born in Virginia. She was 25 when she first married; Proctor N. Peebles, age 55, married, born in Virginia. He was 33 when he first married. His occupation was farmer, general farming.3

Her mother, Rosa Pace Shelton Briggs, died on 19 June 1933 at Virginia at age 74.4

When she was 47, her husband, Nathaniel Proctor Peebles Sr, died on 23 January 1935 at Virginia at age 60.5

Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles appeared in the 1940 census as the head of household on 22 April 1940 at Calvin Point Road, Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia. Also living in the house was, her son, Nathaniel Proctor Peebles Jr and Thomas Briggs Peebles, her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Peebles. She was listed as Mary Briggs Peebles, age 53, widowed, born in Virginia, farmer.6

On 22 April 1940, Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles appeared in the 1940 census as a neighbor of William Dunn Peebles at Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia. She was listed as Mary Briggs Peebles. She was immediately next door; William Dunn Peebles, age 59, married, born in Virginia, a farmer. He owned his home, valued at $2,000.7

Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles died on 8 December 1962 at Virginia at age 75.8 She was buried after 8 December 1962 in Blandford Cemetery in Ward R, Section 3, Square 5a, located at 319 S Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia.8

She was listed in the obituary of Thomas Briggs Peebles on 11 April 2004 as preceding him in death at Petersburg, Virginia. She was listed as his mother, Mary Belvidere Briggs Peebles.9

PEEBLES, Agnes Sylvia Hayvagian, 93, a longtime resident of Waverly, and widow of Nathaniel Proctor Peebles Jr., died Saturday, December 3, 2011. Mrs. Peebles was born in Massachusetts, but spent her earlier years in Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Harry Stephen Hayvagian and Araxie Jamgochian Hayvagian. She was a graduate of John Marshall High School and the Pan-American School. She was employed as a secretary by the United States Tobacco Company in Richmond for 17 years, and as a secretary and statistical assistant for the U.S. Army Logistics Management Center and the U.S. Army Troop Support Agency, Fort Lee. She retired after 20 years of service, after which she served as Librarian for the Waverly Library for nine years. In addition, she served as Vice President of Waverly Motors since the death of her husband. She was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church and was formerly secretary of the Council Board of that church. She was a former member of the John Rolfe Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Mrs. Peebles is survived by her son, Nathaniel Proctor Peebles III and his wife, Kathy Owens Peebles, of Waverly; her grandchildren, Brian Wayne Peebles and his wife, Kristin, of Raleigh, N.C., and Lesley Anne Peebles of Charlotte, N.C; a great-granddaughter, Madison Price Peebles; sisters, Isabelle H. Davidian of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Helen H. Chekemian of Sherman Oaks, Calif; niece, Laura D. Moniz of Pasadena, Calif; and nephew, Larry T. Davidian of New Mexico. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, at the Wakefield Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, with Rev. Donna Smith, Pastor of Waverly United Methodist Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Waverly United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 12, Waverly, Va. 23890, Waverly Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 318, Waverly, Va. 23890 or Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, Va. 23890. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
