Ella Catherine Rose married Benjamin Franklin Mitchell, son of William Mitchell and Lucy Minor Dillard, on 14 February 1869. She was 19 at the time.2 Her married name was Ella Catherine Rose Mitchell.

Ella Catherine Rose Mitchell appeared in the 1870 census as the wife of Benjamin Franklin Mitchell Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on 2 August 1870. She was listed as Ella C Mitchell, age 21, born in Virginia, keeping house.3

Ella Catherine Rose Mitchell appeared in the 1880 census as the wife of Benjamin Franklin Mitchell on 7 June 1880 at Sapony, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. She was listed as Ella C Mitchell, married, age 30, keeping house, born in Virginia.4

Her daughter, Hope Alice Mitchell, died in 1890.

Ella Catherine Rose Mitchell appeared in the 1900 census as the wife of Benjamin Franklin Mitchell Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, 1 June 1900. She was listed as Ella C. Mitchell, age 50, born July 1849 in Virginia. She had been married 33 years. She had had 13 children, with 12 still living.2

Ella Catherine Rose Mitchell appeared in the 1910 census as the wife of Benjamin Franklin Mitchell on 19 April 1910 in Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia. She was listed as Ella C Mitchell, age 59, married once for 42 years, born in Virginia. She had had 13 children, with 11 still living.5

Ella Catherine Rose died in 1930.

Her husband, Benjamin Franklin Mitchell, was buried after 13 March 1932 in Blandford Cemetery at 319 S Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia.

Alice Louise Chappell and Arthur Rebble Poole Sr of Sussex County, Virginia, transferred a deed of property recorded 2 January 1970 to Arthur Rebble Poole Jr. and Betty Martha Samford Poole containing 137 acres, the wife of Arthur R Poole Jr.1

A family picture was taken in August 1982 at Chappell-Poole-Stewart Family Farm Cemetery, 4117 Stewart Road, Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, 23867, 36.884924,-77.554078, with the following people: Betty Martha Samford Poole, Robert Wayne Poole, Beverly Ann Poole, Carolyn Francis Poole and Paula Jean Chappell.2 Betty Martha Samford Poole and Arthur Rebble Poole Jr. lived at 4117 Stewart Road, Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia, 23867.

Alice Louise Chappell's obituary appeared in the newspaper in Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, on 22 January 2007. It listed Arthur Rebble Poole Jr., Betty Martha Samford Poole, Alice Faye Poole Chappell, Gene Poole Chappell, Beverly Ann Poole Morris, James Edward Morris, Lisa Gaye Chappell Gettier, Stacy Gettier, Carolyn Francis Poole Messier, James Arthur Chappell, Paule Jean Chappell Seward and David Seward as surviving her. She was listed as Betty Poole, wife of Billy.3

Alice Louise Chappell Poole's obituary read:

Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Poole Purdy and a grandson, Robert Poole. The funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Concord United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will meet friends at a reception in the church social hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Poole's memory to Concord United Methodist Church

Also living in the house was his wife, Laura C Garthright Sanders, his son, Hiram R Sanders Jr, his brother-in-law, Willis Garthright, his father-in-law, John Carter Garthright, his sister-in-law, Ame Potter Garthright and Carey Garthright. He was listed as Hiram R. Sanders, age 37, married, born in Virginia, as were his parents. He was 26 when he first married. He owned his home. His occupation was dairy farmer.1

In the lineage papers of Mattie Horry (Howard) Martin, his death date is listed as 1833, the same as his wife.

Elizabeth Savage is also listed as his second wife. Must be verified. Her married name was Elizabeth Savage Heyward.

Her son, James Hamilton Heyward, died in 1828.

Her son, Thomas Heyward, died on 15 April 1829 at Whitehall at age 39.

Mary A. Sayers married Dr William Henry Ribble Jr, son of Dr William Henry Ribble Sr and Mary Francis Archer Goodwin.2 Her married name was Mary A Sayers Ribble.

Mary A. Sayers appeared in the 1900 census as the wife of Dr William Henry Ribble Jr Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia, 11 June 1900. She was listed as Mary S Ribble, age 35, born Mar 1863 in Virginia, married. They had been married 3 years. She had had one child, still living.2

Ribble, Jr., were driving on the macadam rood, two miles cast of Wytheville, this afternoon their horse ran off, throwing both out of the buggy, painfully Injuring Mr. Stuart; breaking his collar bone, dislocating his shoulder and bruising him considerable, Mrs. Ribble lias several bones broken and is badly cut about the head and body. She is unconscious and not expected to live.


She appeared in a news article at Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, on 19 April 1906.3

Dorothy Ruth Schubert was born on 8 August 1927.2

Dorothy Ruth Schubert married Joseph Henry Chappell, son of Willie Ambler Chappell Sr. and Ocie Dillard Poole. Her married name was Dorothy Ruth Schubert Chappell. Dorothy Ruth Schubert and Joseph Henry Chappell had no children. At the time of his death in 1972, Dorothy Ruth Schubert Chappell and Joseph Henry Chappell were residing at Rt 2, Box 149-T-22 in Petersburg, Virginia.1

When she was 44, her husband, Joseph Henry Chappell, died on 3 May 1972 at Petersburg General Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia, at age 43 from an abdominal anuerysm.3,4,5

Joseph Henry Chappell's obituary appeared in the newspaper in The Progress-Index, Petersburg, Virginia, on 4 May 1972. It listed Dorothy Ruth Schubert, Willie Ambler Chappell Sr., Ocie Dillard Poole, George Randolph Chappell, Willie Ambler Chappell Jr., Gene Poole Chappell, Glenn Wright Chappell and Margaret Marie Chappell as surviving him. She was listed as Mrs Ruth Schubert Chapell, his wife.1

Joseph Henry Chappell's obituary read:
Joseph H. Chappell – Joseph Henry Chappell, 43, of Rt. 2, Box 149-T-22, Petersburg, died Wednesday night at Petersburg General Hospital.

A native of Sussex County, he attended Highland United Methodist Church, Colonial Heights, and was a member of Namoi Lodge 30 Knights of Pythias, Petersburg. He was an employee of The Progress-Index as a printer for eight years.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ruth Schubert Chappell, Petersburg; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie A. Chappell Sr., Jarratt; four brothers, George R. Chappell, Dinwiddie, Willie A. Chappell Jr., Ashland, Gene G. and Glenn W. Chappell, both of Jarratt and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Gatling, Hampton.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Friday at Concord United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the Owen Funeral Home, Jarratt, from 7 to 9 tonight

Henrietta Annies Garthright, Fielding Garthright, Caroline Francis Scully Garthright, Laura Frances Garthright, Thomas Jefferson Garthright and Everette H Garthright appeared in the 1860 census on 19 July 1860 as a household member living with Edward Finch Garthright Jr at Henrico County, Virginia. The official date for this census was 01 June 1860. She was listed as Caroline F Gathright, age 27.1

Edward Finch Garthright Jr left a will 7 October 1869 and mentioned Caroline Francis Scully.2 The probate document read as follows:
Accounts dated beginning in 7 Oct 1869 for the settlement of the estate of Edward F. Garthright, Jr, by his administrator Caroline F Garthright, wife. Final settlement 18 Sept 1870. Balance due estate $232.86 1/2 after debts of $13.18 paid.

Mentions J. W. Garthright, Oliver Garthright.

She was listed as Caroline Garthright, age 47, widowed, born in Virginia as were her parents, keeping house.3

James Strobhart Seabrook was born on 11 July 1862.1,2 He was the son of Benjamin W. Seabrook and Adeline C. (?).

Adeline C. (?), W. B. Seabrook, Adaline G. Seabrook, Mary H. Seabrook, James Strobhart Seabrook, Paul Edward Seabrook Sr. and John G. Seabrook appeared in the 1870 census on 28 July 1870 as a household member living with Benjamin W. Seabrook at Grahamville, Beaufort County, South Carollina. The official date for this census was 01 June 1870. He was listed as James Seabrook, age 8, born in South Carolina.1

James Strobhart Seabrook, Paul Edward Seabrook Sr. and John G. Seabrook appeared in the 1880 census as a son of Benjamin W. Seabrook on 16 June 1880 at Grahamsville, Beaufort County, South Carolina. He was listed as James Seabrook, age 17, born in South Carolina. His occupation was Depot agent.3

James Strobhart Seabrook married Elizabeth Heyward Horry, daughter of Edward Shubrick Horry and Mattie Caroline Webb, on 29 November 1888 at Church of the Holy Trinity, Grahamville, South Carolina. He was 26 at the time. Note from Horry Bible: "Elizabeth Heyward Horry and James Strobbart Seabrook were married on the 29th of Nov. 1888, at the alter of the Episcopal Church (Church of the Holy Trinity) at Grahamsville by the Rev. B.B.Sams, She 18 and he at the age of 26."

James Strobhart Seabrook died on 20 April 1890 at Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, at age 27. Note from the Horry Bible: " Died at Savannah, GA. on the 20th April 1890 of spinal meningitis - James Strobbart Seabrook, husband of my daughter Bessie, leaving a son four months old, who has since been called Strobart Horry Seabrook."2 He was buried after 20 April 1890 in Grahamville Cemetery, Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina.2

His wife, Elizabeth Heyward Horry Seabrook, was buried after 10 October 1948 in Grahamville Cemetery, Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina.4

Strobbart Horry Seabrook appeared in the 1910 census as a nephew of Paul Edward Seabrook Sr. on 20 April 1910 in Effingham County, Georgia. He was listed as Strobhart H. Seabrook, age 20, born in South Carolina.2

Strobbart Horry Seabrook appeared in the 1920 census as the head of household on 2 January 1920 at 49 East 13th, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Also living in the house was, his mother, Elizabeth Heyward Horry. He was listed as Strobbart H. Horry, age 30, single (crossed through like it said Widowed first), born in South Carolina. His occupation was bookkeeper for a millinery shop.3

Strobbart Horry Seabrook married Hazel H. Hollis, daughter of (Male) Hollis, in 1922.1

Strobbart Horry Seabrook appeared in the 1930 census as the head of household on 2 April 1930 at 584 Candels St N.W., Atlanta, DeKalb County, Georgia. Also living in the house was his wife, Hazel H. Strobbart Horry Seabrook died.

When he was 58, his mother, Elizabeth Heyward Horry Seabrook, died on 10 October 1948 at Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, at age 78. Note from Horry Bible: "Died Oct 10, 1948, Elizabeth Heyward Horry Seabrook in Tallahassee, FL. Death due to complications following a stroke. Buried at Grahamville Cemetery, near Ridgeland, SC."4

David Seward was born.

David Seward married Paula Jean Chappell, daughter of Gene Poole Chappell and Alice Faye Poole.

Alice Louise Chappell's obituary appeared in the newspaper in Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, on 22 January 2007. It listed Arthur Rebble Poole Jr., Betty Martha Samford Poole, Alice Faye Poole Chappell, Gene Poole Chappell, Beverly Ann Poole Morris, James Edward Morris, Lisa Gaye Chappell Gettier, Stacy Gettier, Carolyn Francis Poole Messier, James Arthur Chappell, Paule Jean Chappell Seward and David Seward as surviving her. He was listed as David Seward, husband of Paula.1

Alice Louise Chappell Poole's obituary read:
Poole - Alice Chappell Poole, "Granny", 98, widow of Arthur R. Poole, Sr., died Saturday, January 20, 2007. Survivors include one son, A.R. ""Billy" Poole, Jr, and wife Betty; one daughter, Alice Faye Chappell and husband, Gene; five grandchildren, Beverly Morris, and husband Eddie, Lisa Gettier, and husband Stacy, Carolyn Poole Messier, Paula Seward and husband, David; five great-grandchildren and her beloved pet dog, P.D. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Poole Purdy and a grandson, Robert Poole. The funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Concord United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The family will meet friends at a reception in the church social hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Poole's memory to Concord United Methodist Church

Addie U Shelton was born in 1876 at Arkansas.1 She was the daughter of John Bullock Shelton and Virginia Duke.1

Ida F Shelton, Kate A Shelton and Addie U Shelton appeared in the 1880 census as a daughter of John Bullock Shelton on 10 June 1880 at Keaton County, Arkansas. She was listed as Addie U. Shelton, age 6, born in Arkansas.1

Addie U Shelton died.

Adeline Shelton was born in 1863 at Virginia. She was the daughter of James M Shelton and Mary Adeline Overbey.

Mary Adeline Overbey, Robert C Shelton, Alice C Shelton, Rosa Pace Shelton, Adeline Shelton, Nannie E Shelton, James Shelton, Stephen D. Shelton and Charles E Shelton appeared in the 1870 census on 6 September 1870 as a household member living with James M Shelton at Clarksville, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The official date for this census was 01 June 1870. She was listed as Adolina Shelton, age 7, born in Virginia.1

Her mother, Mary Adeline Overbey Shelton, died before 1879.

Rosa Pace Shelton, Adeline Shelton, Nannie E Shelton and Mary Shelton appeared in the 1880 census as a daughter of James M Shelton on 12 June 1880 at Clarksville, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. She was listed as Ara O, Shelton, age 18, single, born in Virgnia, at home, attending school.2 Her married name was Adeline Shelton Briggs.

Adeline Shelton married William Briggs, son of Henry Caroline Briggs and Mary B. F. Thornton.

Adeline Shelton died.

Research Notes: Samuel and brother William married sisters, Rosa & Ada Shelton respectively.
