Elias Edward Horry Sr

M, #223, b. 10 October 1863, d. 18 July 1938
Last Edited3 Apr 2015
RelationshipGreat-granduncle of Constance Murray Chappell

My Grandfather was Elias Edward Horry.

He was born 10 Oct 1863 in Cokesbury, Abbeville, South Carolina.

At 15, he was the eldest surviving child when his mother died in 1878.

He spent some time working in Omaha, Nebraska, and then Memphis, Tennessee. From his letters in 1892, he was disappointed in Memphis and looking forward to moving to Savannah, GA.

I don't know whether this move occurred before or after the death of his father [in 1892], but he married Mary Oregon "Ore" Howard on 23 Oct 1895 in Savannah, GA.

Ore was no kin to Uncle Havey or Auntie. Her family was originally from Beach Island, GA.

She was working on Wilmington Island, near Savannah, as was my grandfather when they met.

Grandmother died 5 Nov 1969 having been born 14 Jun 1878. My Grandfather died 19 Jul 1938. They are both buried at the Grahamville Cemetery.
1 Elias Edward Horry Sr was born on 10 October 1863 at Cokesbury, Abbeville, South Carolina. He was the son of Edward Shubrick Horry and Mattie Caroline Webb. Elias Edward Horry Sr was baptized on 23 May 1864.2

When he was 15, his mother, Mattie Caroline Webb Horry, died on 24 November 1878 at Woodside Plantation, North Santee, South Carolina, at age 35.3

Edward Shubrick Horry sent a letter to Elias Edward Horry Sr on 28 November 1878 from North Santee, South Carolina. Mentioned in the letter was Mattie Caroline Webb.4 The letter from Edward Shubrick Horry to Elias Edward Horry Sr read as follows:
Woodside Thursday 28th Nov. 1878

My poor motherless boy,

God has again chastised me by taking your mother from us.She died this morning at 10 3/4 oclock. Her sufferings were short but severe, having only been taken sick on Monday. She died without fear trusting in our Lord Jesus.

What is to become of us, what is to become of your little sisters, yourself, and Johnie? I am stunned by this blow and am a forever heart-broken man.

Tell your Aunt Sue, your uncle & grandmother that she spoke of them a few moments before she died. Tell them to pray for me. I am a poor heart-broken man.

Your devoted
Father

Elias Edward Horry Sr appeared in the 1880 Census on 14 June 1880 as a student living at Holy Communion Church Institute, Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina. The official date for this census was 01 June 1880. He was listed as Elias E. Horry, age 17, student, residing at the Institute.5

Mary Shubrick Horry sent a letter to Elias Edward Horry Sr on 23 October 1891 from Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.6 The letter from Elias Edward Horry Sr to Mary Shubrick Horry read as follows:

My Dear Mary,

Yours of so visit to hand [makes no sense] and I am so glad to hear from you, for surely it has been so long a time since I have heard anything of Heyward that I though perhaps your engagement may be broken off several times. Lately I have asked Lila about it. She has never answered me.

Yes, I am here now and intend to make M [Memphis] my home. This moving is not a good thing and sets one back terribly. I am nearer home asside from that have gained nothing except a little rest and 12 pounds of flesh now weigh 138 1/2, the most I have weighed for five years.

My present life is a very lonely one but it will not last long otherwise [I] am very comfortable at the boarding place, good kind people only. I wish I were living cheaper this way of spending all I make is a miserable selfish way of living and am very anxious to be sending my usual amounts home. There are many girls all over the country who are waiting as you are doing and some have waited for years until a house was made for them. One thing I liked about Omaha was the fact of its being an easier place to make a home. They have a big idea of doing things here and it makes a poor young man feel at times hopeless. N.C. sometimes speaks of our getting a home but his ideas of things are entirely too big. He would never be content [I] am afraid in a house that our means would allow the most of our Southern young people want to commense just were [where] their Parents left off. Now I am not taking this for granted but have heard some people talk since I have been here. No doubt you have set me down for a confirmed Yankee well I must admit that my trip south has opened my eyes and it would do many of us good to take a few years in a cold climate.

Please give much love to all over the way. I know and feel how worried you all must be over Cousin William. The good old gentleman is much loved by us all.

Write me whenever you have the time and inclination.

Your affect[ionate] Brother

P.S. Hope by the time you are in need of help that my means will be more than at this writing. You don't know what sweet loving letters I get from L. She is a treasure and so sensible.

Elias Edward Horry Sr sent a letter to Mary Shubrick Horry on 20 January 1892 from Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.6 The letter from Elias Edward Horry Sr to Mary Shubrick Horry read as follows:

My Dear Mary,

Your letter was handed to me at dinner yesterday and I was so glad to hear from you. Don't hear as often from G-- now and I miss the home letters. I know you have your hands full of writing so will excuse you and also know that just about this time even paper and postage is a matter of some consideration.

I hear very little of Heyward now. When will he come home? Of course, you may know that my heart has been with my Little Girl since the illness of the Dr. ... [cut off by the copy machine] so many thoughts to my missing now I don't believe the Dr. will ever get well and what will become of the family. Wil they back up anddivide around amount the relatives or will they be kept together by Paul who lela tells me is doing well, even should the Dr be spared to them he never will be able to engage in any business as he will be weak. I don't want to be impatient but I do wish I were in circumtances so as to make a home for Lila. I now wish very much that I could be located in Savannah and try in some way to form a home in one of these towns near by.

You have lived in Pinora [unclear] and have some idea of costs of living [unclear] ... what is the price of lots. Have you ever heard? Have they got the real estate craze as elsewhere and place prices very high in your neck. Give me some idea. Sometimes I feel very blue about my prospects. I seem only to be moving backwards and my coming to M [Memphis] has bee a great mistake. She will never be the city that Omaha is and there it would have been wrong for me to make such a move if I had known then outcome. It would not take very strong inducements to move me now.

I speak of Sav[annah] because the indications are that all the people I came across are living near there, the chances of my ever making a home here is very slimas everything is exorbitant and there are no towns near me that peopl of small means may make a home in. This move has taught me a lession I will never forget and evennow should I get farily situated here I would not move only speak of doing so now because I don't consider myself fixed at all. Of course all things being equal I would prefer Sav[annah].

I know this move has given Papa more trouble than he will admit to me. You must write me often and tell me all about the little house doings.

Ever affect[ionately], E. E. H

He was listed as E. E. Horry, living at the same address; Edward Shubrick Horry, age 20, born 4 Aug 1898. His occupation was farmer. He was described as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, and brown hair.7

Elias Edward Horry Sr appeared in the 1920 census as a lodger of Gustov A. Schwaab at Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, on 13 January 1920. He was listed as Elias E. Horry, age 54, born in South Carolina. His occupation was bookkeeper in a real estate office.8 The letter from Elizabeth Heyward Horry to Elias Edward Horry Sr read as follows:

Darling Bubber,

Of course your letter distressed me, telling of Johnnie's condition. But so glad you wrote for I want to know all about him.

At first, the dictates of my heart was to go to him and see what I could do. But in re-reading your letter, I realized that the place of having Mr Doubly stay with him, is much the best, and I think it is a wonderful idea to have him for I would not have the strength (I am not feeling so well) to cut and bring in wood. Bring in water etc or any lifting that may be required. And with no facilities over there for cooking, I really would be little help, except to tidy things up (which he would not appreciate) and be a comfort to him in little ways.

I feel that if I stay here and work and help defray expenses that I will be of more help that way. However, if you feel that I would be a comfort to him and that his condition justifies my doing so you know I will not hesitate to come to him.

Financially I am "pinched" right now. I came here owing Danta quite an amount. She had deprived herself to help me in my need. Since coming here I have been paying her back. And when this operation she has just gone through came, I knew her experience would be great. So I sent her all I could manage 1st this month. I laughingly told the folks in the office that after paying bills, that I would have 83 cents left in bank! But the dentist can wait until March the 1st. I want you to feel Bubbie darling that I am right with you in helping your defray extra expenses. I will do my part. By all means, keep Mr. Doubly. Should [name unreadable] have another stroke, there is no telling what may happen if no one is around. He could fall in fire for instance. We could expect no help from Danta right now.

I will send your letter on to Mary [Mary Shubrick Horry Eppes ]. She should know Johnnie's condition. She has little, but of course will wish to assist also. We should all pull together. And we will remember that when Johnnie had, he gave. However, our whole idea in doing for him now is that he is ours and we love him. I have just written Johnnie and sent him $10.00. And I am enclosing in this a check for $5.00 to you. All I can get hold of right now. Please be sure to let me know exact conditions, as to how Johnnie is, his wants, and how much does it cost to have Mr. Doubly. Now, I must write to Mary and Danta, and I promise A. A. not to keep things from her. So I have plenty of writing.

I will also write Ore [his wife] a note. (I realize she and Mat have a big part in helping and will do it ) but will you send her this letter by next mail so she will know just how I feel. I count on hearing from you.

Devotedly,

Bess

..."this present Mr. Horry, who was of the third generation in this country, was a very wealthy man, owning plantations along the river, and living at a beautiful one called Hampton, about forty miles from Charles Town. He was an only child, had been educated at home, and sent afterwards to England; had made the Cherokee campaign, had married a Miss Serre', and had lost his wife and two children, He was now (in 1766) a childless widower; his portrait shows a very good-looking, olive-complexioned man, with handsome mouth and chin; and although he was older than his bride, there was no such discrepancy of years as there had been between her father and mother, he being then about thirty-five and she nineteen."
