She appeared in a news article at Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on 19 May 1899. She wrote a poem that appeared in an undated newspaper clipping.5

Bessie Web Lamar's poem that appeared in the news read as follows:

To The Memory of the Norristown Dead

At early evening hour
A train, with speed and power,
     Rushed on its way!
Within, a happy throng,
With laugh, and jest, and song,
     Closed the day!

A tribute they had paid.
One of the gallant dead,
     By all revered!
The day so kindly spent,
As they were homeward bent,
     Their spirits cheered!

But, ah! what dreadful fate
Did those glad hearts await,
     Ere home was reached!
Was it in field or wood,
That the Death-Angel stood,
     With arm out-stretched?

Those who, at close of day,
Passed merry time away,
     And onward sped
Were, without parting word,
Last wishes all unheard,
     Numbered with the dead!

God has his way, unknown,
Of gathering His own,
     To us severe!
Let broken hearts be still,
Yield to His gracious will,
     He'll make all clear.

Into the darkened home
May his dear Presence com
     With Heavenly rest!
The weeping for a night
Give way to morning light,
     And all be blest.

Woodside Thursday 28th Nov. 1878

My poor motherless boy,

God has again chastised me by taking your mother from us.She died this morning at 10 3/4 oclock. Her sufferings were short but severe, having only been taken sick on Monday. She died without fear trusting in our Lord Jesus.

What is to become of us, what is to become of your little sisters, yourself, and Johnie? I am stunned by this blow and am a forever heart-broken man.

Tell your Aunt Sue, your uncle & grandmother that she spoke of them a few moments before she died. Tell them to pray for me. I am a poor heart-broken man.

Your devoted
Father
