Janie M Will

F, #306, b. 26 August 1923, d. 21 May 2013
Last Edited1 Apr 2015
ChartsDescendants Chart - Edward Mitchell Eppes Sr
Janie M Will was born on 26 August 1923 at Richmond, Virginia.1

Janie M Will married Edward Mitchell Eppes III, son of Edward Mitchell Eppes Jr and Margaret Eleanor Gaines, after 1967. Her married name was Janie M Will Eppes.

Her husband, Edward Mitchell Eppes III, died on 15 March 2001 at Lively, Lancaster County, Virginia, at age 78.2

Edward Mitchell Eppes III's obituary appeared in the newspaper on 16 March 2001. It listed Janie M Will, Anne Ainslie Eppes, Margaret Mitchell Eppes and Theodore M. Curtis Jr. as surviving him.3

Edward Mitchell Eppes III's obituary read:
Though he served as staff physician on the city's payroll and at The Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Richmond News Leader, Dr. Edward Mitchell Eppes III remained first and foremost a dedicated family doctor.

"He put so much time into his feelings for people," said his daughter, Margaret Eppes Curtis of Kilmarnock. "He just had that people feeling."

Dr. Eppes, of Lively, formerly of Richmond, died Thursday. He was 78. He was the retired staff physician for Richmond Newspapers Inc. and for both the Richmond Bureau of Fire and the Richmond Bureau of Police.

Rarely pulling punches, Dr. Eppes preferred that his patients had all the facts about their health.

This, his daughter said, meant that he often told it like it was, even when the truth hurt a bit. "He was just always honest," she said. "If you were just way overweight, he would say 'You're too fat.'

"That's just the way he was," she said, and "his patients loved it."

He also had an understanding side when the job called for it, said one Times-Dispatch veteran recalling his first encounter with Dr. Eppes.

Days before starting work, the young reporter was warned by a co-worker that an existing medical condition had delayed his own first day on the job by weeks.

Knowing that he would soon need treatment for the same chronic ailment, the veteran was sweating bullets before his exam with Dr. Eppes. He could ill afford either the cost of treatment or to miss any paychecks.

Once in the Dr. Eppes' office, the young reporter took a shot at playing it cool. "He told me to cough and I sort of made this little sound, holding back."

He recalled the doctor's skeptical look - his cover had been blown. Just when it looked like the gig was up, "he looked at me and he said, 'You'll make it till next payday.' "

A native of Richmond's North Side, Dr. Eppes graduated from the University of Richmond before attending the Medical College of Virginia.

He served in the Navy, stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital and at a military hospital in Guam, before returning to Richmond to enter private family practice.

Dr. Eppes retired in 1985 to devote time to his favorite pastimes: hunting and fishing.

In addition to his daughter, Dr. Eppes is survived by his wife, Janie Will Eppes; another daughter, Anne E. Cowdrey; a stepdaughter, Margret Johnston Magill; and two stepsons, Jack Kelly Johnston Jr. and Matthew Will Johnston, all of Richmond.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's White Chapel Episcopal Church in Lively.

On 29 May 2013, Janie's obituary appeared in the newspaper.1

Janie's obituary read:
LANCASTER—Janie Will Eppes, 89, of Lancaster died May 21, 2013. She was born August 26, 1923, in Richmond, the daughter of the late Matt P. and Helen Sauer Will.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Eppes III, M.D; her two sisters, Olga Will Cosby and Margret Will Claud; and a granddaughter, Erin Grey Magill.

Janie is survived by her children, Jack Kelly Johnston of Richmond, Margaret Eppes Curtis of Kilmarnock, Margret Johnston Magill of Weems, and Matt Will Johnston of Morattico. She also is survived by three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and 11 nieces and nephews.

Janie's love of the Rappahannock River began during the Depression when her father purchased a farm in the Northern Neck near Lively. When not attending St. Catherine's School in Richmond, she and her sisters were encouraged to be "river-rats" and in later years passed this tradition on to their children.

Janie was a member of the Tuckahoe Women's Club in Richmond, various bridge clubs and church groups. She was an avid fisherwoman who usually cleaned and cooked the catch with fresh vegetables from her kitchen garden. She loved gardening and flower arranging. Over past decades, the farm, which was her home, has been on many garden tours.

Janie was a member of St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church where she and the late Dr. Eppes were dedicated to the alter guild and met many of their best friends. The family wishes to acknowledge them all, as well as her assistants, who have stood by her for many years and made it possible for her to die peacefully at home.

A memorial service was held May 28 at St. Mary's Whitechapel. Janie had a sincere appreciation for the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic in Kilmarnock, Va. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the clinic designating the Diabetic Clinic, P.O. Box 1694, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.

Currie Funeral Home of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
