Chappell and Louis Malcolm Chappell was part of the settling of his estate. He was listed as ____ Chappell, grandson, age 16, of Tampa, Florida. Louis signed a quit claim to the estate.3

Louis Malcolm Chappell died on 28 October 1949 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 22 when the small airplane he was piloting crashed.1

He appeared in a news article about regarding his death at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, on 29 October 1949.

Louis Malcolm Chappell's news article read as follows:
Canyon Fire Rages; Flier’s Body Found

Fire-swept wreckage of an airplane and the charred body of aman were found yesterday high on the mountainous slopes of Haskell Canyon as the roaring brush fire believed caused by the explosion of the craft rages out of control northward after burning more than 3000 acres.

The man was tentatively identified by Sheriff’s Captain Sewell Griggers as Lewis M Chappell, 22, of 4211 Fountain Ave., a student pilot.

Capt. Griggers led a horse patrol through the flaming underbrush to the scene of the crash after it was spotted earlier from the air by Helicopter Pilot Harry Mitchell and Lee Berriman, fire-line superintendent.

Wind Reverses Blaze

A mid-afternoon reversal of wind direction sent the flames leaping north through the underbrush with the speed of an express train away from the 300 are backfire that had been set Friday at the foot of Haskell Canyon

The blaze at a late hour was burning briskly, enhanced by low humidity and a light breeze. The flaming “front” of the fire slopped over Del Sur Ridge into Bouquet Canyon. Del Sur is the main ride separating Bouguet and San Francisquito Canyons.

Hope For End

A crew of from 150 to 200 men was to be kept on the line throughout the night as fire control officers mapped plans to make an all-out effort to bring the fire under control today

Hary Grace, fire control officer of Angeles National Foret, who is fire boss of the 224 men battling the blaze, believed that “within a few breaks” the first may be brought under control by 10 am today.

Plane Seen Circling

“If it gets pas us,” he said, “it’s heading straight for Bee Canyon – one of the most dangerous palces to work men in California.”

He added,”We an’t put men in front of the first the way it’s moving now. They’d be fried crisp.”

The fire was first reported after 1 pm Friday, 45 minutes after young Chappell had taken off in a light plane from Gardena Valley Airport.

Forestry lookouts said a plane had been seen circling the Haskell Canyon area minutes before the flames were spotted

The plane is believed to have crashed and exploded, setting the extraordinary dry brush afire.

Two residents of the area, Bailey Haskell, for whose grandfather the canyon was named, an R. F. Brawley Jr., both of Newhall, went in on horseback at dawn yesterday to seek Chappell’s body.

They said they passed within yards of the crash but failed to see it. They reported seeing hundreds of deer fleeing before the fire.

Capt. Griggers found the body nearly one-fourth of a mile from the plane’s wreckage. Later, it was brought by horseback to the fire camp and taken to a Newhall mortuary.

The are in the path of the fire is uninhabited. Is it wild, rugged, (continued on page 12, column 5) ...

[I do not have the entire article. A copy was given to me by one of the Chappell family.]
He was buried after 29 October 1949 in Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Section M, Tier 34, Grave 24, Glendale, California.4
